Toft Slow Session

Toft Slow Session

An event which was previously called The Saturday session and put on hold due to COVID was revived in March 2023 with a slightly revised name and ethos. The Toft Slow Session is a traditional, mostly Irish, music session for players of all levels of ability and experience, where tunes are played slowly. Specifically, it is aimed at people who are learning or reviving an instrument, people who want to play together as a social activity in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and people who find the speed of other traditional music sessions just a little too fast to join in comfortably.

In 2025, we met in January, March, April, May, July, October and December. Each session was attended by between 10 and 18 players on a range of instruments, including fiddles, guitars, whistles, concertinas, melodeons, mandolins, mandola, bouzouki, double bass, bodhrán and uilleann pipes. Our list of tunes grew from 30 in January 2025 to 39 by December and we’ll be starting 2026 with over 40, covering most types of traditional tune: reels, jigs, slip jigs, slides, polkas, marches, waltzes and flings. After the Slow session finishes around 9pm, the evening continues with a ‘slightly faster session’ with songs interspersed. The Slow session grew from strength to strength in 2025 and has become a regular fixture at The Club, attracting both musicians and a number of faithful listeners.
