Toft 2025

A year in the life of Toft

Month: February

January Diary

January Diary

This is where we capture things that are not picked up elsewhere.

This month marked the conclusion on a non-statutory consultation on EWR. The situation at moment is that the route and the elevation is sorted. It’s proposed that it will run under the A428 and for the route close to Toft it will be in a cutting with Hardwick Road and Comberton Road going over it. There’s a petition being raised to have an independent review of the project as the business case, which hasn’t yet been seen, must be dubious. Unfortunately, Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor has spoken out supporting the project.

A working party spent a couple of days preparing the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Area for a hedge that was planted. Here’s the working Party; Katherine James, Mike McCarthy, Phil Miles, Tricia Ellis-Evans, Steve Pugh, Cynan Ellis-Evans, and Roc and Martin Yeadon. Also a Rowan Tree has been planted in the Rec.

Donald Trump has been inaugurated as President of USA and applied 25% tarrifs on Canada and Mexico and 10% on China. EU is probably next.

Temperature & Rainfall

Toft average Rainfall and Temperatures over the 5year period Jan 2020 – Dec 2024

Rainfall

You will see from the charts that over the 5year period the wettest month was October and the driest was April.

The month with the greatest monthly variation in average rainfall was February and the month with least variation was June.

The wettest year was 2024 and the driest was 2022

Max Min Temp

The full year figure for 2020 is an estimated figure. As there was no recorded data for Jan and Feb 2020. I took the average Jan and Feb data for the years 2021-2024 and added to the 10 months recorded data for 2020 to give an estimated figure for the full year.

Year 2021 had the lowest average yearly temperature 2022 the highest (when the adjusted figure for Jan and Feb 2020 is taken into account).

In the two years following 2022 the yearly average has fallen so not sure if Toft got the memo on Global Warming.

Note: Both Rainfall and Temperatures were recorded at Brookside Toft

Keith Collett

A wake / celebration of Keith Collett's life was held in the Hall on Saturday afternoon - there were in excess of 100 people in attendance, a sign of how well known and liked Keith was.

Proceedings were overseen by Barbara Preece, who gave us a wonderful eulogy on Keith's life, followed by a video created by Mike McCarthy, then a farmer's poem, some thoughts from Keith's brother Koran, and two pieces of music.

The Club opened the bar, and Carol prepared a tasty buffet which was served by an amazing team of volunteers.

It was quite a send off.

Open Mic

There was a good turn out for the February Open Mic with seven performers; Chris, Graham and John, Dave, Silver Linings, Will, The Hats, Martin, Paul and Patrick, Kats's band, Kat, Adrian, Paul and Phil, and Kat's band 2 with Alan, Dave (and the bass guitarist; sorry). John did the sound and Craig did the bar. (The attachment shows pictures)

Insects waking up

Yesterday's sun had a real warmth to it and the insects responded visiting this Clematis cirrhosa flowering against a south-facing fence. I am pretty certain that it is a Buff-tailed Bumblebee but was very small for a Queen. The most numerous visitors were honey bees stocking up on nectar and pollen. As always a few blow flies around (Calliphora vicina) - one is covered in pollen illustrating their importance as pollinators. (The warm sunshine and insect visitors were appropriate for the day of Richard Revel's funeral emphasising his very large contribution to entomology and his delight at any glimpse of the approach of spring)

Casino Night

Saturday evening and The Club turned into Monte Carlo for the night,  with an invite to dress up for the evening, people made a real effort and wore their finery

It had all the fun and atmosphere of a casino,  but tokens were used instead of cash, so people were happy to take some risks and high stakes!

During  the evening a fish & chip supper was served and people played into the evening, there were a few high earners with the winner retuning a healthy 4000 plus tokens.
